CAROLINE HARKER INTERVIEWED
Caroline Harker plays Fiona Harrison in The Man Who Lost His Head for ITV1 Network
Caroline Harker admits she was secretly delighted to be able to wear a wedding dress for her role in The Man Who Lost His Head.
She plays brisk, no nonsense businesswoman, Fiona Harrison, who is engaged to museum curator Ian Bennet, and is arranging their wedding like a military operation.
“I am not married, although Anthony (actor Anthony Calf) and I have been together for years. I haven’t worn a wedding dress before, so I was quite excited about it, and secretly looking forward to it,” confesses Caroline.
“I think I am a bit old for a big meringue dress so the costume designer chose an elegant ivory satin gown for my character. I think there comes a time when you don’t wear a meringue.”
Fiona Harrison is a stressed businesswoman, and the daughter of the man who runs the museum, Ian’s boss.
“Fiona gets so fixated on the wedding, which I am sure is a familiar thing to lots of people, that she doesn’t really notice whether Ian is there or not. So the wedding could almost take place without him! She just expects him to be there on the day, and it will all go with a swing.
“I think she is so busy organising the event that it is almost easier that he is not there, and he is on the other side of the world. Couples do get like that, to the stage where the woman will pack for her partner. Not me I hasten to add.”
The wedding scenes were filmed amid the splendour of Auckland Museum, after the tourists had left for the day.
Caroline and Anthony’s eleven year old daughter Ceci makes her television debut playing her mum’s bridesmaid.
“It was half term when we were filming and I took Ceci to New Zealand for a little holiday. The wedding scenes were being filmed at night, and it was difficult to find a child there who could film through the night, so they asked if Ceci would like to be bridesmaid.
“It is Ceci’s television debut. She appeared in Hello magazine when she was a baby for a feature my sister Susannah and I were doing for a charity. I’m not sure whether she wants to be an actor though. She says she gets too embarrassed.
“I was delighted to have the chance to work with my daughter, and it was perfect timing because it was at the end of filming and it helped us to re-adjust to British time before we flew home.”
Caroline and Ceci managed to squeeze in some sight-seeing during their brief stay in New Zealand. Her six year old daughter Annie, short for Anemone, stayed at home with her dad.
It was Caroline’s second working trip to New Zealand. She filmed the ITV drama series Growing Rich, written by Fay Weldon, there 16 years ago
“I had a fabulous time when I filmed Growing Rich in New Zealand. I stayed with friends in Auckland, and then went on to stay with friends in Australia. It was a real adventure for me. So it was lovely to be able to go back to New Zealand, and catch up with friends.”
Recently Caroline appeared in the film Lady Godiva Back in the Saddle with James Fleet, Tony Slattery and Phil Cornwall. She also stars in a forthcoming episode of The Commander as Celia Imrie’s daughter. She also starred with her mum Polly Adams, and Penelope Keith in a stage play, Entertaining Angels.
Her other television credits include A Touch of Frost, Foyle’s War, Auf Wiedersehen Pet, and A Dance to the Music of Time.
