THE ROYAL - GARETH HALE JOINS THE CAST
Comedy veteran, Gareth Hale has been cast as a regular in ITV1’s 1960’s medical drama, The Royal.
Gareth, best known as one half of the comedy duo Hale and Pace, and more recently for playing Doug MacKenzie in Family Affairs, will play ex-Merchant Navy Officer Jack Bell, who steps into his cousin Ken’s (Michael Starke) shoes, as a Porter at St Aidan’s Royal Free Hospital.
Michael Starke, who recently joined Coronation Street as Jerry Morton, has played hapless Porter Ken Hopkirk since the series began in 2003. Michael can be seen back in The Royal when it returns to ITV1 this Sunday at 8.00pm.
In scenes that will be screened next year, viewers will see Ken leave The Royal to fulfil his ambition to run a B&B in Torquay. Jack subsequently arrives at the hospital, but on day one a problem arises – he’s squeamish and faints at the sight of blood!
Gareth yesterday said, “I’m really excited about joining the cast of The Royal. It’s a fantastic show and I love my character. Having read the initial scripts I think Jack’s certainly got the potential to get himself into some mischief.”
Ken Horn, Producer on The Royal, added, “Gareth is a great addition to the cast. Jack is a fun loving character and I’m sure he’ll prove popular with the viewers.”
Gareth has just started filming his scenes in Yorkshire for the seventh series of The Royal that will appear on screen next year. He will be joined by a number of fantastic guest stars including Claire King, Brian Blessed, Phyllis Logan and Sean Wilson.
